Anticipate the difficult by managing the easy. -Lao Tzu
Upon seeing this, I immediately thought of a remark from another military leader, Napoleon Bonaparte: “A leader has the right to be defeated but never to be surprised.” Both of these speak to a singularly imperative quality in every aspect of life, area of interest, and field of study: preparation. Both statements relate to something intrinsic to good leadership: vision. And both reference an inevitability: challenging circumstances, even some that may not be overcome. Exercising foresight only emerges after dedicated analysis of one’s current position and the factors surrounding it. By carefully and thoughtfully engaging the ‘lower rungs’, you will be ready as the climb becomes steeper.
